Sign Permits

The By-law Division is responsible for issuing Sign Permits regulating permanent and portable signs and other advertising devices, the posting of notices on buildings or in vacant lots, and awnings or marquees which project over a street.  All construction must comply with the City of Owen Sound Sign By-law.  To obtain a Sign Permit for a project which does not comply with the Sign By-Law, a minor variance is necessary; please contact the Planning Division.

Sign Permit Applications & Fees

When is a Sign Permit Not Required?

A Sign Permit is not required for:

  • signs or other advertising devices posted on the interior surface of any window or glass door in any building in any zone except in R1-, R2-, R3- and RS- zones
  • any sign or other advertising device erected in the interior of any building
  • municipal addresses mounted on buildings or on free-standing signs on any lot
  • awnings & marquees that do not project over a street, except that any signage thereon shall require a permit

How Do I apply for a Sign Permit?

Submit a completed application form with the required information to the Building & By-law Division.

Your application will be checked for compliance with the Sign By-Law and you will be advised if any modifications are required to your plans in order for your project to comply. Your Sign Permit will be issued when all necessary approvals have been obtained and all fees have been paid.
