Waste Management Program

Long Term Waste Management Plan

The City of Owen Sound has initiated a waste management planning process to develop a long term plan that will provide for the sustainable management of its waste.

The City currently exports its waste to the United States for disposal. City Council has determined that this system is environmentally unsustainable in the longer term. In response to this challenge, they have initiated a long-term waste management planning process, and they invite you to participate in designing the solution.

Mandatory Recycling By-Law - For industrial, commercial and institutional facilities. This has now been adopted as policy in the City of Owen Sound. Details can be found here.

Tip

With Owen Sound's cold winters and warm summers, people sometimes leave their vehicles idling unnecessarily. If you are stopped for more than 10 seconds, (except in traffic), please turn off your engine. It takes less fuel to restart your engine than it does to idle for 10 seconds.

Unnecessary vehicle idling:

  • Wastes fuel and money,
  • Contributes to climate change,
  • Affects local air quality and our health, and
  • Can damage engine and exhaust components.
