Olympic Torch Relay in Owen Sound a Family Affair

Torch Run PosterThe excitement of Christmas this year will be extended by several days due to the Olympic Torch Relay coming to Owen Sound on December 28th, 2009.

Activities commence on Sunday December 27th with Family Day at Harrison Park, hosted by The Festival of Northern Lights Committee.  Skating, skiing, tobobbaning and lots more will happenon that day.

Monday December 28th will be filled with things to do in downtown Owen Sound in anticipation of the arrival of the Olympic Torch that evening.  From 1-4 pm there will be a Family Carnival along 1st Ave. West, featuring music, crafts, clowns, food, animals, games and lots of fun.  Entertainers include yodeler Naomi Bristow, Tyler and John Beckett in the music tent, and at the Library Richard Knectel will entertain at 2:30.  Parents and children are invited to the Art Gallery to make noise makers from 1-3pm, to use later in the evening during the celebrations. Come get a hot drink at St Andrews Church.

The Craft Show at the Market Building starts at 4:00 pm featuring local artists and artisans selling their merchandise.  There will also be live demonstrations showing their talents at spinning, wax carving, paper cutting and making torch beads.  Birgit's Kitchen will also be open in case you get hungry.

At 6:00 pm a huge Celebration Program will take place on the stage at City Hall Square, featuring local talent including francophone singer Diane Marie, Kristan Anderson, our poet laureate, Owen Sound Little Theatre Singing Troupe will perform Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  Also appearing will be Haydan Stewart, The Anne Milne School of Dance, the Sapsuckers, The Georgian Bay Children's Choir and Larry Jensen.

The highlight of the evening will be the arrival of the Olympic Torch, carried through our beautiful Festival of Northern Lights by our Community Torch Bearer Jason Crone!

On Tuesday morning December 29th, a Sunrise Service starting at 6:30 am will take place beside the Chi-Cheemaun as the Torch leaves Owen Sound to the sound of aboriginal drums.

Torch Information
  • The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will begin its 106-day Canadian journey on October 30, 2009.
  • It arrives in Owen Sound on Day 60.
  • The Flame’s pan-Canadian journey will culminate on February 12, 2010 when it arrives in Vancouver for the Opening Ceremony before a global viewing audience of billions.
  • The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay route will be the longest domestic Torch Relay in Olympic history, stretching over 45,000 kilometres throughout Canada.
  • Upon its conclusion, the Olympic Flame will have been welcomed in over 1,000 communities and passed within a one-hour of more than 90 per cent of the entire Canadian population.
